Australians spent more money of games in 2009 than ever before. For the first time we cracked the $2 billion mark for games - including hardware, software and accessories.
Industry tracker, the GfK, reports that Australians spent 2.05 billion on games in 2009, up 4% on 2008 (where we just missed out on $2 billion). The high levels of gaming sales come dispute the global financial crisis taking its toll over the two years in question. That would suggest Aussie families are turning to home entertainment, such as games, rather than going out to expensive activities.
"I’m curious whether anyone has calculated the amount you personally spent on games last year. Was it more than the year before? Did the “global economic slowdown” affect your games spend?" Ron Curry, CEO of the Interactive Games and Entertainment Association, asks gamers.
The GfK's figures don't include online downloadable game sales, such as those from Steam, PSN, Xbox Live and WiiWare. This also means DLC and subscriptions are not included.
