Yes I know, however the weapon type will not change. If you get an iron hammer, reloading and trying after another quest will either get you an iron hammer again or rusted hammer.

101 Earth Crystals, it's quite easy once you know where to look, got about 30 in an hour.
ETA:
Mega Demondrug = Pale Extract + Demon Drug, 55% success rate
Demon Drug = Catalyst + Power Seed, 65% success rate
Catalyst = Honey + Bitterbug 75% SR
Get some combo books before doing these.

As I said, rust stones will either convert to rust weapons or plain weapons. I have 2 rust stones which convert into SnS and a lance, neither would convert into rust weapons, just iron SnS/lance. Everytime I fail, I reload and do a quest to try again.
I got a rusted hammer, but hammers are useless against wyverns, so I'm trying for the SnS and lance.
ETA: Got a rusted SnS!! Now I need another 40000Z for Eternal Strife... Got a buttload of Earth Crystals already, 99 to be exact, and that's after using 60 ECs to upgarde that rusted SnS twice.
