a psp that is "bricked" means that your psp is as useful as brick. This occurs when something stuffs up in your psp flash, or IDSTORAGE. A Psp can be FULL BRICKED, won't turn on, these are completely unrepairable unless your get your psp chipped. A semi brick is when you flash a file that prevents your psp from actually loading up, so you'll hear and see the intro then it freezes. (this is fixable if you have custom firmware that features a recovery menu). Most the time PSP's are bricked when Updating or downgrading and you have powerissues, file corruption or just unlucky. But modifying the flash can also cause bricks. Another cause is the PSP virus, which is a file you have to download and execute and it just deletes important files in your psp's flash.

There are a few ways. Using a UP chip is the most common. I am currently using a compatible NAND chip with modified 1.5 F/W on it. I get the bricked PSP running by booting of the external NAND then running a homebrew nand programmer. Just before it starts to program I switch over to the onboard NAND. It is a bit more complex than that but you get the idea. Micro soldering is the tricky bit.
