Killzone: Liberation - 4/10
I have given this game 4 stars. I was gonna give it 3. Why?
I bought this yesterday with my PSP, so it's the first game I have played on PSP. The style of gameplay is like no other I've played on any system, so Guerilla have been able to work around he fact that PSP have only one analog. You basically run around, diving behind cover, firing at the enemy as they fire at you from behind their cover. Sometimes they charge you as you hide. They don't really take much notice of when you are reloading, and there is no 'sneak' factor to it, so no shankin them in the kidneys. The only strategy I can see is correctly placing yourself in the scenery so as to avoid fire. You can also operate tanks, mounted machine guns, hovercrafts and jetpacks. In some sections of the game, you must escort a 'buddy' NPC through the level. These range from dedicated team mates, who will elp you fight the enemy, to civilians, who dont do much except for get in the way. Your job to keep the alive, is to utilise the 'Tactical Command System'. Press, the Up button, and the gameplay slows (much like on Prince of Persia) you give a command, basically make a decision to a couple of options on screen eg: various cover within sight, or a C4 placement point etc etc, or you can tell the NPC to continue following you. I have only played the first chapter on this, but it seems to have quite a bit more to go, following the map inside the game cover. There are a variety of unlocks and upgrades. These include new weapons, weapons upgrades, various skills eg: more health, more bullets, less time at placing C4, and unlockable characters, for use in single player and multiplayer. Also has downloadable content available. These include more characters, play modes for the multiplayer and single player challenges, and themes.
I bought this game because IGN gave it game of the year alongside Metal Gear Solid: Portable Ops, but noone has MGS, and I'm not buying Acid.
It's very well made, it has redefined shooters for PSP, includes some awesome graphics, loads fast, plays well. Strategy and AI is pretty arcade, but it is adequate.
If it was just a little more intelligent in its execution, it would have gotten 5 stars.
