You have to be 16 and 9 months or something like that. You go to your local RTA and they give you a book to study from. You go back a week or so later and take the test if you pass you get your L's if you dont you can have other chances.

16!! I have to be 17, and by the time I'm 17 it's apparently going to be raised to 18.

It's different in every state.

In Vic, you turn 16, you book a test with VicRoads, you read the book and do the website, then you do the test - somehow people find a way to fail it?

Anwyay, noooow, they're changing the laws. So you HAVE to do 120 hours driving before you can get your P's, and once you have your P's you can't have more than one passenger aged 16-24. This is seriously this biggest turd crap **** ever and i want to crap all over the people who decided this. I have a whole argument, but meh.

Anyway, that's Victoria.

Yep I'm hoping they'll take their sweet time brining that into SA and also the no driving after 11pm that's stupid. I think it might still be 50 hours here or maybe it's 100 going to 120 or something I can't remember.

Right there hummer.

How would they know you drive 120 hrs? Do you record it or something...

ooh, and in vic, theres like a 2 month delay or something... so the earliest you can actually take the test is 16 years and 2 months.

I noticed nobody has given out a straight answer here yet.

At your local RTA office you will first need to book an appointment to sit the test and hope that you have a knowledge of all the rules under your belt. Best of learning all your shiz from here www.rta.nsw.gov.au/ or from reading the road knowledge handbook which can be downloaded for free from the website or purchased at your RTA office. It's over 100 pages long so it's easier to read if you buy it in my opinion.

If I remember correctly and when I took the test last September, it's $40 upfront to sit the exam and another $20 to get your learners permit when you pass. If you don't have the $20 then you can not get your permit and will have to sit the test again.

Keep in mind that appointments are hard to get depending on location so make sure you don't miss out. You will also need to fill out a rather large amount of paper work before you go for your appointment with evidence of you are who you are.

Always keep the log up to date every time you drive. I drive almost all the time and I'm only just going to make it into the 120 hours margin. It's a stupid amount of road time but it'll be worth it in the long run.

They provide you a big book. In that you take down what the date, the license number of the car you are driving, the odometer start and finish, where you drove to, road conditions, traffic conditions, signature from the supervising driver and the start and finish times of your drive.

To make up the massive amount of time it would require at least 30 minutes of driving a day. For some people that's almost equal to going to and from work. With oil prices the way they are it's a wonder that anyone could find it possible to get it done, even worse if you have two full time working parents. Many of my peers haven't done any more than 10 hours, whereas I've clocked up 60-70 hours.

That's why my phobby parents converted the camry to gas.
how long did 70 hours take you?
how would the know you are logging the truth?
check the odo on every car you drove?
you could always ask your parents to sign even though you didn't drive...

It's on honesty system. If you were to fake most of your book then it would be very likely to reflect on your driving test to get your provisional license. I have been on the road since September last year.

Driving on your own opens up a whole new world for you. Best of getting them asap to avoid even more hikes in the hours you need to do.

Honestly, get it. If there's one thing NOT to be cynical about, it's this! All our lives we grow up wanting to be 18, then when you get there, you've gotta do something special. Most teens drink underage anyway, so that's no change. Apart from clubbing or pubbing, driving is the only change, so it has to be done! HAS to!

No, it just takes a while to get a booking. So if you were to book at 15 and 10 months, you'd be fine, but i doubt it takes that long to get a booking for your L's, i know the P's is booked out until July, when the changes take place!
