Archer Maclean's Mercury - 3/10

*** STORY ***

Read the blurb at the top of the review...

*** GRAPHICS ***

Solid. The physics engine is very nice and the graphics on screen are very functional. It's not going to win any awards, but it's not bad to look at either.

*** SOUND ***

Simple and functional sound. Again, it's not going to win awards, but it does the job. This kind of puzzle game does require over the top sound to do what it's meant to.

*** GAMEPLAY ***

This is the core of any puzzle game and Mercury is no exception. It's devilishly hard at times and you can have your hair tearing out in frustration when the little precious blobs go the wrong way. With a clock to keep the pressure on, you will regularly have to retry a level several times in order to finish it. That all said, it's different in terms of puzzle games and quite refreshing, a nice game to pick up and play whilst waiting in a line somewhere.

*** CONTROLS ***

Clever control method involves tilting the game world and using gravity in order to move the blob around. It requires quite a lot of co-ordination and skill, meaning that solving puzzles are a combination of tactical skill as well as motorskills. It can get a little frustrating at times, but it's a nice system and presents a really unique style of gameplay that's quite addictive.

*** OVERALL ***

A solid entry into the relatively thin PSP Puzzle gaming market. Mercury has many hours of gameplay packed in and enough action to keep you on the edge of your seat. The time limits and required co-ordination will keep the pressure on and you can waste away just a few minutes or hours playing this game. It's not going to set the world alight on pace or action, but it's not meant to either. Overall, a solid and interesting gaming experience.
