Formula One 2005 - 5/10

M1K's Review

Graphics – 7/10

The Graphic are pretty good. The in-game shots are very detailed and provide an excellent backdrop for each of the tracks. On track the other cars sometimes can look a little blurry but I guess that would happen at high speed in an F1 vehicle.

The replays after each section of a race are little blocky, I’m sure this could have received a little more attention as this really does add to the atmosphere of the game.

Sound – 6/10

My first thought was, why is there music while I’m driving? After going into the options menu and turning this off I settled down and expected the sounds of an F1 monster to resonate through the system.

Whilst the car does actually sound pretty close to the real thing the sound sync is we below par. At times the sound volume from the car decreases making the car sound as though it has disappeared from sight.

Game Play – 6/10

This game was never designed to be anything more than an arcade port of the F1 season, while I knew this before purchase I thought it would be closer to a SIM than it is. One of the most disappointing aspects is the steering, forget the analog pad as this will see you squirming from one side of the track to the other.

The A1 in this game are pretty poor, there is no intelligence at all with cars holding there lines, erratically moving into your path as you dive under brakes and generally ramming you out of the way in traffic. This is a long way from your expectation of a game like this.

As you progress through the seasons (difficulty unlocks – new seasons) you do unlock various bits and pieces, you also have longer races and the requirement for pit stops come into play. It would be better is you could actually determine your own strategy for your stops I hope they look to implement this is later versions.

Difficulty – 6/10

As you progress through the game it does get a little harder to progress through the field but it really isn’t much of a challenge to win most of the races through each setting.

Value – 5/10

F1 games have the potential to having you coming back for more if done right, this one sadly wont do that. Whilst not as boring as F1 has become, it is rather repetitive and doesn’t allow you to really be challenged.

One of the options that saves the game a little is the Scenario Mode that gives you specific challenges. I found this section the most rewarding in the game.

Summary – 6/10

This game is ‘alright’ and is more for a quick pickup and race. If you’re an F1 fan it will be a little disappointing but you’ll still play it often, but only because you love F1.

With all of the racing games out there to choose from I don’t think that F1 2005 fares to well. This is really a rental or borrow option for most people as after a few days you will easily forget that you even own it.
