Where are you located mate?

You will want to avoid Vista. It runs slowly even on fast systems - slowly compared to XP anyway.

If you are in Melbourne I would recommend www.upcw.com.au they will work with you to design the right system. You will need to ask them if XP is still available though... That will be an issue anywhere.

I would go 4GB of RAM on a Vista system.

Steve.

OK i make computers... LOL... ok now Windows Vista can be hacked by a three year old... ive seen it happen... OK back to comp...

XP itself need a BARE MINIMUM of 512mb of ram so you need 1 gig MIN i would suggest 2gig or more..
and the rest is up to WHAT you want to do with it...

AND ALSO Vista itself need a BARE MINIMUM of 1gig of ram just to run itself... keep that in mind guys OR your comp will be overtaken by grannys in walking frames with snails for rollerblades...

When they made FSX they made it for non-PC enthusiasts making it able to run on even a 5 year old laptop (seriously I did that so people can't say its Bull Sh*t ).

You do have a good processor, and will not need to upgrade that any time soon unless you are willing to pay, oh, say $110 for a new processor.

Your RAM is fine really for XP but you are playing FSX which is the most RAM hungry game I know of. So upgrade that to 2GB and you'll be sweet and can upgrade to 4GB in the future if you feel so inclined.
Depending on your RAM type DDR400/DDR2 (DDR2 is better but you will have to check your motherboard). It currently costs about $50 for a 2GB single stick of DDR2 RAM

Yeah but I've played FSX on XP and Vista PCs that have different hardware.

You can't check your motherboard in Windows from my knowledge, It should be in the BIOS startup page, otherwise actually look on the motherboard itself.

BTW
do you have a PCI Express graphics card or an AGP graphics card?

I haven't read the whole thread... a friend who knows less than you was asking me about this similar thing. This is what I came up with from centrecom:
E8400 -207.00
ASUS P5E MOBO -214.50
Seagate 320gb sata2 -81.70
Pioneer DVR-215 SATA DVD-RW drive -29.99
Corsair DDR 2gb PC-5300/667 (2x1gb) value -53.90
Samsung 22" 2243BW W/S LCD -293.70
Cooler Master Elite 331 Black/Silver Tower Case (420w) -69.00
Floppy drive -15.00
XFX 9600 GT Alpha Dog Edition 512mb... (PV-T94P-YHS4) -214.50

Centrecom build -$75

That's $1179.29, then add $75 for the shop to build it for you. It will run just about anything you throw at it very well. Also, since you don't know much I feel you should do some research. Don't get sucked in by bigger numbers and letters like GTX. The E8400 is an Intel dual core CPU that runs at 3.0ghz without overclocking. For a bit less you can get an older quad core (Q6600) that does 2.4ghz (maybe 2.6, cant remember). NOTE: Quad core does not mean processing power=GHZ*4! You will get more out of a 3.0ghz dual core than a 2.6 quad core.

That's all for now, hit me up with any questions.

[1500 char limit sucks]
Lawso, 1gb ram can be up'ed to 2. I manage at 1gb ram with a 6600GT.

I've been using this same system for about 5 years. (I upgraded from 512mb ram to 1gb start of this year - got some stuff second hand).

Skitch93, I do believe you build computers. Sorry, I'd never let you make me a computer.

On to the biz:
OSs... I use XP. Managed with 512mb for quite a long time, I'd suggest it as a minimum. Vista, I'd suggest 2gb ram. I'd suggest XP unless you have a system like what I've posted above... I'm happy with XP.

If your buying a new system, minimum you can really buy is a 2x1gb kit (2gb).

Your mobo can be checked in windows... go and download a program called CPU-Z. It tells you everything you need to know, and all the stuff you don't. Very easy to use.

6600GTs are the best you'll get on an AGP system, hence why I haven't upgraded (I need a whole new system). If I were to get a new system, I'd get something like the above +- a few a things maybe.

I don't really feel I have to right now but is it worth overclocking an intel dual core 2.0GHz?
My cousin built my PC for serious overclocking with the sic corsair OC RAM, an nForce 780i (triple SLI) motherboard, and a massive Zalman custom CPU heatsink. When he gave it to me it was overclocked to 3.0GHz already, but crashed alot, I took the CPU back to factory settings only to find it crashed because of a lack of mobo drivers. Its all fine now, but still running at 2.0GHz I'm thinking about running it at 2.5 but is the power really worth it.

This is a PC I am going to build for my friend (him paying for parts)
the basic specs are:
4GB RAM
2.4GHz quad core CPU
Nvidia 9600GT
500GB HDD
DVD burner
gigabyte EP45- DS3L motherboard
viewsonic 22' inch screen
Coolermaster case&PSU

comes to a total price of just over $1000 and less than $1100
www.msy.com.au/

BTW
The intel Q6600 (quad 2.4) easily overclocks to 3.0 on the stock cooler, just to let you know thats what I read.

Oh and ATI just released a 3870 on AGP, I suppose its an untapped market.

But you should really get a high-end CPU cooler for ANY overclocking. Also make sure you have good airflow, not just in and out air. (Air needs to get to the CPU fan).

Unless you use liquid cooling...

Maxiboy if your in the know-how and have all the right gear (CPU cooler - you dont really need all that fancy ram you realise?), and you know the instability was caused by drivers you should OC the Q6600 to 3.0ghz.

/edit
Maxiboy can you list the parts in that $1k PC? What your wrote isn't very meaningful...

Yeah the case has really good airflow, on the side it has a hole & extendable tube that pipes in the cool air straight to the CPU, also there is a 120ml exhaust fan in the back.
Yeah I know you don't need fancy RAM but its not as if I'm going to get rid of it now.

**EDIT**
I'll get a screenshot of the excel sheet I made

Hehe, my case has one of those ducts. Some new Intel standards thing... they probably charge case manufacturs to use it... bah can't be bothered explaining.

But my old mobo doesn't align on it completely Probably all new mobos do though. Especially Intel ones.

Looks good I suppose. 9600s can be had for less than $200 now, pretty damn impressive. I guess that computer looks good, as long as you OC the Q6600 and pimp it out with cooling. Otherwise I'd opt for an E8400.

get a PC built with vista.
XP will be out of date eventually and if you get it built with Vista, you can get the OEM verison put on which is significantly cheaper than putting it on yourself at a later time.
