I chose Blu ray cause of Sony and guess what. I think they just might win:

new stroage disc media. Looks just like a normal cd but holds around 51 gig of storage. All PS3 games will be made on blu-ray.

54gb is only when its a 'Dual layer' blue ray, and Hd-Dvd is only 27gb when its 'dual layer' normally the discs are about half this, and as much as i am a sony fanboy, i really don't think that microsoft will take a loose, Picture this, Microsoft releases there new operating system 'Vista' and WHAT only Hd-dvd compatability!! lol, But thats how i see it, Blue ray will kick ass for sure but Hd Dvd won't go down without at fight

....And guys keep it clean

Players for tvs etc and drives for pc's will be available that play both formats, so it wont matter which format wins.

the thing with blu-ray is it has diffrent layers that are able to be read from, so you can store alot more data on a disc with more space ( kinda obveous)

I was informed that it was not dual layer. I will double check this and find out. If you have a link or something that shows so, could you please put it up? That would be great.

I honestly cannot be bothered with the next version of Windows. Let me bring out whatever, wiht Mac releasing the Windows virtual environment, the playing field is going to be levelled. And if you want something more stable and more secure, then Macs are the way to go. This new venture is the perfect reason for those people (like myself - who usually sit on the fence) to jump onto the bandwagon.

Besides, I am not going to get a PS3. I heard/read somewhere that it leaks out alot of radiation - and they are going to restrict the sale by the buyer's age. I think I might just wait for the next gen console to come out. And the 360 ain't better. Challenge anyone to put the console on its side and watch it fizz in 15 mins.....

Now who likes their PS2/PSPs?

The blue-ray company are working on a 8 layer format which could hold up to 200gb.My opinion is HD-DVD and blue- ray will both do well.

why would we need 200gig? As far as I can see only if you wanted to store more than 1 movie on the disc but think about 1 disc if it got scratched you lose alot of movie or a series.

Very good point SM.

But with the imminent release of the 750gb HDD by seagate, it only seems natural that people expect the storage capacity of CDs to increase. And asyou rightly said - one scratch and its all gone.

Besides - if we do get 200gb, I don't think it will hold more info on th eone disc. i.e. - HD recording will take alot more storage so it evens out. eg. it takes 3.96 gb on High qualtiy recording for me (uncompressed), thats nearly one single layer dvd gone. So as the quality of recording increases, the storage required on the CD/DVD increases which leads to the need for the storage capacity to increase.

Which comes out to the same thing.

Hmmmmmmmmmm... Very good point L. Another thing though are discs really the future? I think Sony hope they are, but downloading has been thought to be the future by more than one person. Could go either way I don't really know enough about it.

At the end of the day, Its up to the consumer whether to get HDDVD or Blue-ray, sure the two companys are competiting in the market place.Technology will only get better and besides theirs alot of support for blue-ray why would sony invest in it.

Well the Radiation Leak of PS3 is a HUGE rumor and has NOT been confirmed (in fact I personally think it's a load of bull$h!t), but overall Bluray will win the battle in the end, higher storage capacity means more detailed games...

Well we will still need a way of getting our information around. Sure the net is a good way. But what if you are going to another company. Ok that sounds strange - let me explain.

You got a FT job, you want to get a powerpoint presentation from one place to another. Sure you can go there and get them to download it. But what are the chances of them allowing external people to use their system to access the net? Most likely zero. Therefore a CD would be a good way. Although now that I think of it, so does a USB key.... but many companies only allow certain USB drives in their machines and they need to be from a specific vendor and undergone a security check.

A CD - although can do harm, its still seen as a viable option. That is why you would like to have dics. Plus what if you wanted to give your friend a copy of your latest movie creation? Sure you could get him/her to d/l it, but what if they have reached their limit?

Discs are just an option. Which many people will still use in the future because no one likes change. And I should know - Im one of those people that try to get people to change their systems for the better and they are not always accepting of the changes.

HD DVD is already out in America. I cant see Blu Ray ever catchin up. Sony always lose whenever they try to dream up a new storage medium? Remember Betamax? Minidiscs? UMDs? All total failures.
