what it is is a display an image on screen and say you put on one of their controllers (the noviant falcon) , your hand will appear on screen and say e.g. is was a ball with bumps in it, you could run your hand over the ball and have the sensation of touch, a very realistic touch as well as you can feel all the little bumps over the ball

everyone understand?

bit of a weird controller though

But it is one step forward over the Wii controller

here it is straight from the article

'For example, a Novint demo at E3 placed a three dimensional ball on screen, covered with a variety of lumps and bumps. The falcon grip controlled an on-screen hand that ran over the surface of the ball. As the hand went up and down over the lumps the resistance increased and decreased accordingly, which produced a rather believable sensation of touch. Another demo involved shoving a hand through a ball of goop. Movement was free and easy until touching the surface, at which point the resistance became much stronger as the hand penetrated the ball until it suddenly popped out the other side and once again became free. Another fun demo allowed users to draw back the string of a bow and arrow, with resistance becoming increasingly strong as the bow became taught. Arrow release resulted in the sudden disappearance of all resistance and an incredibly realistic sensation of the release of a great deal of physical tension'

It is innovative, but in a few years from now, once it evolves, it would be like comparing todays mobile phone, to the old brick phones of the 80's. But all technology has to start somewhere.

A simple way of explaining what it is/does. is like this:

In the picture of this artyicle, you see the pesons fingers holding the little ball, with several cams (arms) holding the ball in place.

OK, in this example, on the monitor/screen there would be a picture of a 'cyber' hand, and a pile of gloop.

As your cyber hand moves towards the gloop (by pushing forward on the ball on the controller) the movement will have no resistance, but as it enters the gloop, there will be resistance, as the cams will push harder back on the little ball (that your real hand is pushing), making it harder to move your 'cyber' hand into the gloop.

Once you push through the other end of the gloop, there will be no resistqance again, and it will feel normal again. (free, no resistance)

Did that make sense?

Another example:

If there was a small box on the monitor/screen, and you were to touch it with you 'cyber' hand. (by pushing the controller ball downwards with your real hand), as your hand brushed accross the top surface, your hand would drop as soon as your virtual fingers had passed the surface of the box.

And you would be able to feel a virtual square object using your cyber hands. (the cams resisting in the area where the virtual box lay).

Its hard to explain, but you either get it, or you don't.

The Queen mary 2 has virtual golf, u hit the ball into a curtain type thing which has sensors in it and the ball flys physically, then hits the curtian, then it flies digitally.
the things tv teaches u...
