give akido a look, no great long katas to memorize and very useful in street situations with the added bonus of playing with wooden swords now and then

for a standard martial arts tho- muay thai IS the strongest- and it's got a very strong real-world value as most martial-arts (karate, tae-kwon-do, judo, aikido etc., etc.) don't. it's called the 8-point fighting...something :-P -- you use hands feet, elbows and knees-- I have really long legs as well, and kicks are really hard to use, but knees (and elbows) are incredibly effective in close quarters. in most fighting styles, elbows and knees are taboo, but that's why muay thai's so much realer than alotta other ones- in a real fight, they're awesome.

Not neccesarily true, i have a friend who does muay thai and a friend who does tae kwon do and when they sparred tae kwon do came out on top the reason was very simple muay that fighters only go for 5 rounds, and use a lot more muscles when they use the knees and elbows hence the get tired alot faster and my friend just started kicking the crap out of him until my other friend gave up so muay isnt always the best although it IS claimed by many people to be the most people because most people have died in the ring from it

well when people think taekwondo they think taekwondo in general there are many types of taekwondo its not all just kicking there are self defence areas aswell most taekwondo's dont each much self defence like in alot of depth it just really depends on the student

In response to Melad136 and Elraro in this thread relating to Ninjutsu. Ninjutsu in Sydney, or Australia in general, is not that hard to find. The art has been growing and flourishing in Australia for a couple of decades now. There are a number of schools in nearly every state of Australia with some very highly ranked instructors which have close links back to Japan.

Ninjutsu doesn't however go by that name anymore due to the "ninja boom" that occurred through the 80's when it became commercialised, hence our stereotypical (and often incorrect) view of the art. It now goes by the name "Bujinkan Budo Taijutsu". I've studied several martial arts myself, Aikido, Karate, Judo ... the Bujinkan art is indeed incredibly effective in real-life situation and in very deadly.

If you want to know more and find dojo's in Australia check out this link. From there you'll be able to find the rest of the dojo's in Australia. Enjoy!

I have been doin karate for 6 years and im 1st dan black belt if you really want something that would help you in the streets or what ever i would suggest karaet Z(not tradional thats for fags lol) but in karate you tend to take a bit from all martial arts beacuse if you know how the body works you can defeat and body.

I do the Evolved Traditional style of Wing Chun King Fu.

I have found it to be quite effective against many styles. The style I do, looks at methods to counter-act every other move out there - sure its good to get some grounding in other styles or understand the basics, but when you know the most efficient way, why would you bother with other styles... well for the basics... then you evolve them!

Although developed for shorter people, if you apply the principles, it is effective for anyone.

And I have to disagree with some of the comments in this thread. Some of the arts are there for sports, thats why they can be put in rings. Whereas others are for combat - although they can be applied to rings... you're whole aim is to "crush, kill, destroy" - not that others can't do the same thing but they have a different focus. Muay Thai for one is a combat style. So is Kung Fu. Karate and Taekwondo are more sports. Well its my opinion. I have seen a Taekwondo V Muay Thai. I'm sorry - the guy blasted him (its also on the net...).

*had to go in 2 posts*

Plus the people that you come across in the "street" tend to be martial artists that are overconfident and arrogant. So learning something that deals with any kind of attack gives you an advantage.

Speed & efficiency will always win.

And to all those that are going to tell me about "strength", answer this: How hard must someone punch/strike/attack your eyeball? Or your "nether" regions?

There are some muscle groups that you can never train. Plus don't get me started on pressure points. Besides. Kung Fu is all about the art of deception.

Disclaimer: Please do not get into any fights at all. That usually resolves most issues.
