One of the greatest 2D game series of all time, it is mutually agreed upon by the gaming community that the Sonic games have lost their way since venturing into the 3D arena. Sega has been expectedly quiet on the issue although Sega of America Marketing veep Sean Ratcliffe said in a recent interview regarding the 3D Sonic titles that "Some of that criticism is probably warranted."
Ratcliffe mentioned that it is difficult to maintain the quality of a game series that has been running as long as Sonic. "However, I would say we recognize it, which is why you’re seeing us this year taking the first steps in making sure the quality is right, and we’re constantly looking at innovation. We can’t just stand still with Sonic; we’ve got to be looking at different ways to develop the character, different genres, and so on."
Sega accept the criticism over the 3D Sonic titles as being fair and take this as a challenge upon themselves to reinstate the quality Sonic titles of old. Upcoming titles including Sonic Unleashed, Sonic and the Black Knight and Sonic Chronicles: The Dark Brotherhood, are hoped to initiate the revival of the Sonic series.
