Depends what you're into really, all Linux distro's have the basic functions, but some are more specialised for some things than others.

For example:
PHLAK being specialised in network security, so if you were an IT technician you'd probably choose this to test your networks.
(I can't think of any more examples but hmmm, it's not that didgey the first example I come up with is this??)

My preferance is Fedora, it's a pretty basic one with no real speciality.

EDIT1
I Downloaded Mandriva once, never got round to trying it out.

Let me know if it's good!!

EDIT2
Better give you link for Fedora:

OK now I need a new OS myself. Currently eying down KateOS to run on my laptop. I need something that doesn't use a DVD and doesn't have a high expectancy on the hardware requirements. NimbleX runs just great but doesn't really like being installed harddrives too much and Ubuntu and all it's variations are not an option since they all have some form of hardware conflict. And another thing, they must have wireless support.

Right now I got XP booting off the harddrive until I partition the rest of the space and put something on it. Downloading Fedora right now and going to give that a run.

apparently alot of people have trouble with linux working with wireless on laptops, mainly the newer models. though some work.

i've now tried Ubuntu and mandriva and can't connect to my network

I'm usually okey with getting my wireless to work, but I only really use livedisks, and already have the drivers installed on the computer for windows, Linux seems to work out what to do with them.

It's being very evil on me. I've been leaving Xubuntu for awhile now and still waiting on the installer to load. On second thoughts, I'll just use the alternate CD so I don't have to put up with the crappy live cd install method.

I have tried both official and the variations. It just doesn't agree with this laptops hardware. There are loads of other distros out there that work better, it's all a matter of discovering them.
