The only "catches" are that one you need the right equipment and two, if your internet connection is down your phone is down...

However if you are talking about Skype on the PSP (which I haven't used), I don't see the PSP as being a replacement for a proper phone handset...

No, im talking about the actualy phone you can buy

so you must be at a wireless acess point even if you have that phone????

Ideally what you want is a VOIP compatible router that allows you to plug in a standard phone. Then you can set-up Naked DSL and do away with the need for a dedicated phone line.
The only real catch about this, is that those rare times your internet connection is dead, your phone is dead...
