No seriously use both, dualboot

I have my gaming PC which obviously runs XP, then there's my secondary PC that I recently acquired from a friend who got a laptop and moved interstate. It isn't powerful enough to play games, but it's perfect for average tasks like word docs and browsing the internet, it is full of crap and viruses so in the holiday's I'll completely wipe the hard drive back to the stone age then put in Ubuntu and maybe XP aswell if I can be bothered

Ubuntu Linux runs wireless fine, it's just the live CDs that don't connect to the internet

If you are going down the linux path, you'd definately have both on a dualboot, as invariably you are going to need windows at some point (especially if you are a gamer)...

Personally if you have an XP disk why in the end would you want to run linux. Despite people's whinges against microsoft, XP is a good and stable o/s, it has about 1000 times the software and despite the fear mongering you are fairly safe from viruses and the like as long as you know what you are doing...

I would only ever go down the path of Linux on a PC if I didn't want to pay for a copy of windows...

Well It's be a good learning experience... As for making your PC go faster, the first thing to consider is more RAM. It's dirt cheap nowadays...

Yeah I originally wanted it for the learning experience, using dualboot programs and just using another OS completely.

Or you could try Puppy Linux and run it off a USB Memory Stick.....this way you have a complete operating system wherever you go and boots straight from the USB drive......all it takes is less then 1GB and your good to go.....

I use to play with Red Hat a few years ago but had continued problems with going wireless router......

In the end (about 4 years ago) I was put off and ended up with XP. I know recentrly went to Vista and must admit, that regardless of what some have been saying, it so much better and stable then XP....

Anyway, here is a good site with up to date kernels for Linux.....

Pros (XP):

- Play all games
- Run .exe programs

Cons (XP):

- Viruses can happen alot
- Can be slow

Pros (Ubuntu):

- Safe
- Good Games
- Wine Emulator

Cons (Ubuntu):

- Have to get plugins for gmail/hotmail etc
- Youtube doesnt automatically work
- Doesnt automatically run Windows Programs

I say get ubuntu but set up Wine, the plugins etc.

YouTube doesn't automatically work on XP either, you still have to download and install flash player.
