Social \ Problem With my Computer

Ok. I just got a computer from a friend and trying to fix a problem that always occurs when i try to install XP SP2.
When ever i tried to install XP SP2, it boots showing The "ASUS P4P800S SE" motherboard boot screen, then goes on to the XP boot screen, then after the XP boot it just restarts and happens allover again
But when i install SP1, It works like normal. I bought a new HDD for him to try and install SP2 for him but it did the same thing.
Any ideas. he needs SP2 because for his work programs that only run on SP2 or later.

Here are the specs for the comp.
ASUS P4P800S SE Motherboard
Pentium 4 2.80GHz
512 ram
Seagate 250gb IDE HDD

Please help

Googled you this. Might be relevant.

Other than that, can't really offer you anything in the way of help, as all my XP SP2 installations have been flawless.

Also, are you running the SP2 update, or are you using an sp2 cd?

Have you tried integrating sp2 into a windows cd using "nlite"?

Sounded like a shoddy install, boot from the XP disk instead of the hard drive and re-install Windows, I'm pretty sure there are 2 options on the install screen and select the lesser of the two that allows you to keep your documents and settings as they were.

That would be the software issue.
There are sometimes hardware issues to check though they are unlikely unless you've been messing around inside.
Does the PC restart at the same point every time?

Some Asus motherboards (And other kinds, of course) have issues with SP2 installations. Read the link in my last post. It should be more or less pointed at the relevant section.

Mooooootherboard. Most likely. Disable the restart on error thingy by pressing f8 during the windows whatchamacallit and selecting the option to do so, so you can see error messages if there exists such a thing.
