DBZ:Shin Budokai - 4/10

Dragonball Z Shin Budokai.

Well, when i saw the trailers for it I wasnt really impressed, it just looked like Budokai 3 with the addition of janenba and some others. I've played all the Budokai's to death, over and over with my friends on the ps2.
So when i got a PSP for my birthday i was happy it game with Shin Budokai. So first thing i did was turn it on and start playing.

Graphics and Animation:
At the start of the game i expected there to be an awesome intro cartoon movie, like in previous games. (Except tenkaichi... the 3d one was awful) But no, just a video made up of ingame content.. mm.. not impressed..
Well, the cell shading graphics work just like in the previous games, even if they're abit choppy around the edges on some characters (Especially Broly). Although his special attack looks pretty awesome! >=)

The arenas you get to fight on are quite detailed, but the lack of a larger choice in arenas lets this part down. The energy blasts and special moves, i do lke. Nothing makes it more 'dragonball z' than a good old energy blast filling half your screen and smashing in your enemy to bits, and hearing them scream in pain.

Sound
Mmm, Japanese and English voices! Great! *Switches to japanese!* Glad they gave me this option, the japanese voices dont sound as corny when they're saying 'I win!' x)
The music is generally the same as other budokai games! Except for a few additional tracks here and there, all sounding pretty much similar.

Controls and Fighting
The controls are very similar to those of Budokai 3 except for a few modifications to the fighting engine. The ability to stun your opponent by pressing R then Punch adds a whole new aspect to the game, meaning your dodging must be precise in order to avoid bieng hit by special attacks, otherwise you'll just be a sitting duck for that Final Flash Vegeta just powered up. But, the controls are pretty easy to learn, although.. this game is rather fast paced compared to your tekken etc.

Game Modes

Alright so i've finished story.. what? already? That took me a few hours, =/.. alright so i've unlocked all the characters, i'll have a few duels against the computer...?
...Nope
No duel mode. Just 'Training' with the option to set up a *match* in that way.
Bandai.. Where the hell did duel go? *smashes something* Damn it!!
No world tournament? Not as far as i can see anyway. *glares* Why...
Alright so theres arcade mode.. which you cant pick your opponent, and theres a few other modes that lead to seeing how many matches you can win without losing, etc.

Characters
Most of the basic heroes and villans are available for play, except half of the budokai 2, 3 and tenkaichi characters arent here... which is a big let down for the game. ><

Overall 8.5/10

All in all, its an excellent game. The main thing that lets it down is the lack of characters and simple game modes like 'Duel'. Any hardcore budokai fan would definatley notice it missing. This game is totally ideal for Dragonball Z fans!! Otherwise it might not be your type of game. -- 8.5/10
