OutRun 2006 Coast 2 Coast - 8/10

*** STORY ***

There's not really much story to this game. It's a remake of the classic Arcade racers from the 1980s brough to your handheld. You get to drive around like a maniac to impress a chick with your ferrari, that's about all the story there is!

*** GRAPHICS ***

Graphically, this game is very nice! The presentation of the tracks is in line with the original and there's a new set of custom made tracks as well which all look superb! Being a purely arcade racer the track design is solid and easily accessable, whilst the action is fast and furious. The sensation of speed is very solid without feeling like you're hurtling around on an out of control red bullet. It's definitely one of the better recent releases on the graphical front and is very nice to look at.

*** SOUND ***

The sound is solid and functional. The sound tracks to the game are pleasant to listen to and the game action is represented well. It's not the kind of game where you want the sound track thumping in your ear non stop, but it's not going to have you reaching for the mute button either.

*** GAMEPLAY ***

If you're a classic gamer (read, old fart with a joystick!) you'll love this remake of a classic racing game. The extra modes of gameplay are damn nice and the ability to play not only the original tracks, but also a new set give the game some real long term appeal.

The extra game modes are a fun and interesting distraction, but the core of the game still lies with the pure checkpoint racing fun and it does it extremely well. Whilst some arcade racers on the PSP try and pretend to be realistic, this game does not and stays closely tied to it's arcade racing roots. As long as you're not expecting the next Grand Turismo in this game, you can expect a very solid and enjoyable racing experience.

*** CONTROLS ***

The controls are servicable and configurable. Being an arcade racer, the digital input is fine for your acceleration and braking and the analogue nub works well for the steering.

The ability to drift in this game is superb (right up there with Ridge Racer IMHO) and the handling on the cars is very good, even at high speeds. It's not what I'd call realistic at all, but remains fun and you won't get frustrated with this game because you can't control it.

*** OVERALL ***

In terms of arcade racing games, Coast to Coast presents extremely well and as long as you're not expecting realistic or serious, it delivers on all fronts. From the graphical presentation and sound through to the fun and furious gameplay, there's many hours of enjoyment to be gotten from this game. Whilst some will prefer the other street racers like NFS or Ridge Racer to get their racing fix, in terms of purely fun racing with a light hearted perspective it's difficult to go past Coast to Coast.

Well worth picking up.
