Activision Hits Remixed - 2/10

*** STORY ***

There's no story to the game. It's a collection of classic console games from Activision. The Atari 2600 was a classic console for it's time and this kind of collection is made for those kinds of old school gamers.

*** GRAPHICS ***

What graphics? It's utter 1980's rubbish of course, but that's the entire point. They didn't try and remake anything there, they're just porting the old classics onto a modern format. If you were born after 1990 and think nostalgia is a dirty latin word, move on, this game collection is not for you. Represented here is what games were like back in the day where 16 colours was considered big time, ascii art was cutting edge and you could tell the difference between 78 different types of beep. Roll on the olden days!

*** SOUND ***

As above - complete rubbish. But that's what you had back then too! The front end for the collection is naturally nice, but the games themselves are accurate ports of how they were at the time, in all their pitiful glory!

*** GAMEPLAY ***

The one thing that can be said for programmers of yesteryear was that they could make fun and interesting games out of a few coloured blocks and a few beeps. Gameplay is what made the console such a success in it's time and this collection is all about bringing back that experience to the old school gamer. The newer generation will not appreciate this any more than they appreciate an old FJ holden. Move along kids and let the oldies have a little fun...

*** CONTROLS ***

For an arcade console that had an 8 way directional joystick and a single firebutton, there's not much you need to deliver in order to make the emulation complete. It's simple and does the job, just like they used to make em...

*** OVERALL ***

Whilst this little collection of games is perfect for the oldies among us looking for a little nostalgia, a lot needs to be considered on whether it's really worth a new modern game pricetag, regardless of the fact that you're getting quite a lot of bang for your buck in sheer number of titles on offer.

This gaming system was fantastic in it's day, but it's done, dusted and buried in the modern format and when you consider the sheer amount of man hours that goes into a modern title, it's hard to justify the same pricetag for a rehash of old classics, regardless of how it may shed a nostalgic tear in your eye.

Truth be known, you're probably better off installing an emulator for the 2600 on your PSP and get the entire 3000 odd Atari games on your PSP instead for free and weighing in at only a few meg on the memory stick. I'm all for old school gaming and reliving the classics, but I think big game companies need to reconsider their strategy when they think rebadging 20 all time classics and charging full price is really going to be worth it. Perhaps those old schoolers who like to play the oldies but don't tinker might be interested in this, but the kids of today and the tech savvy old schoolers will either avoid this or find other ways to get their old school gaming fix.
