KezDaMuss Review Of Lumines II - 9/10
I recently purchased Lumines II and can honestly say it has been one of the best purchases i have made for my psp yet. When i first put the game in and loaded it up i will say i was a lil dissapointed for a psp game that the graphics and stuff were not up to say GTA standard but i remember the fundamentals of the old Playstation 1 games...never judge a book by it's cover...as i delved more into this game i have discovered how addictive it really is
Graphics: Score: 7/10
As i said above, at first i was dissapointed on when i first saw the graphics of this title but the more i played the more the graphics grew on me and fitted well the the gameplay. The visuals in the background are stunning but most of the time you are too busy focused on building you little squares rather then admiring the view. Gamers that are expecting top notch graphics will be dissapointed but never judge a book by it's cover..
Sound: Score: 9/10
The sound in this game is one of the areas where this game really excells. Every move of your block sends a relevant noise that is related to the song. For example in a stage where the song is a rock based theme, every move of the cursor has a short vocal "button", and when you clear a square it gives a sweet guitar riff. The more you play the game the more music you unlock and there's even a feature to create your own music!!!
Gameplay: Score: 10/10
This is where the game really excells! The objext of the game is simple, drop down blocks onto the canvas to create little 4x4 squares. You can as well pair up the 4x4 boxes to create combos and earn more points. Sounds easy and boring? Wrong while you are trying to build these blocks the timebar comes across the screen and wipes out any squares you have made giving you the points but wiping any combo you are trying to build. To master the game you will have to plan ahead, planning where blocks will drop to create the best combo and higher score. There are different gameplay modes such as challenege which has 3 difficulty levels that once you hit a certain score, the music changes to a higher tempo, which makes the timebar move faster as well as making the blocks fall faster.
Also avaliable are Puzzle Mode, where you have to create certain objects in the avaliable time limit, Mission mode, to destroy the blocks in a certain amount of moves, Vs CPU which has a very Puzzle Fighter type feel for me where you battle a CPU oponent to control the screen. There are also multiplayer options for those looking to play friends and many many more feautres.
Overall: Score: 9/10
In summary this game is simply amazing. Addictive, Fun, In-Depth and just plain old challenging. This game should definatly go in the PSP hall of fame for this fantastic gameplay and use of strategy. Puzzle games have been reborn with this game!
