Metal Gear Acid - 5/10

Being the fan of Final Fantasy Tactics, Front Mission and the like, I couldn't ignore the chance to get my hands on the one game the psp has to offer that's of a similar type.

The game starts itself off with a somewhat lengthy intro cut scene (or if you want to be pedantic, a few cut scenes). This can be slightly off-putting, but only really if you are aching to get into the action straight away. Luckily, you can skip some cut scenes and quickly advance through all the speech bubbles.

The general game play is quite simple to pick up and making mistakes is really just part of the game. You're allowed to retry missions you've already completed to try to score better than last time (although, it'll be counted as an 'extra mission' with different objectives). During missions, the game works using similar dynamics as the previous games. You can crawl, knock on walls, evade and even hide under boxes.

The soundtrack is really only there to help set the scene. It doesn’t lower the quality of the game in any way for me, but it also doesn’t make it stand out in my eyes either. Granted, it’ll pick up the pace and help with the adrenalin rush when you’ve been spotted though.

The graphics themselves I was very impressed with. None of the screen shots I’d seen on the internet do the game any justice at all. The models themselves aren’t anything new what with them looking quite similar to the original ones. The level designs are very clean and pleasing to look at.

There are only a few small problems players will need to contend with when playing Metal Gear Acid. The X and O keys are ‘swapped’ around such that X is considered a ‘back’ or ‘cancel’ button and the O is ‘confirm’. Playing this game over a long period of time before swapping to another game (or even the psp’s menu) will definitely leave the player disorientated and accidentally entering menus left right and center.

To sum up though, this game is a great addition to any psp fanatics collection. I do reccomend that the gamer at least try out the game before purchasing as this game isn't designed for everyone. I'd give it a 7/10 it's not the best game out there, but it certainly isn't the worst.
