News \ Rumour: EB Games Won't Stock PSPgo

Rumour has it that EB Games will not stock the PSPgo when it launches in Australia on October 1. The revised PSP has done away with traditional disc, or cartridge, based media in favour of being all about digital downloads. Apparently EB are none too happy about this, and have responded by snubbing the new model.

The PSPgo is set to launch next week, and yet there's no trace of the system on EB's website. Many stores also don't have the console in their database, further fueling the rumour.

Retailers generally break even on hardware sales, and profit on the software. Combined with the fact that EB are one of the leading preowned game retailers in the country, and it starts to become a little clearer as to why they may avoid the hardware. However, the $449 price tag of the PSPgo is predicted to be well above the production price, suggesting that Sony accounted for retailers needing to make a profit when they set the rather hefty price.

Digital distribution is set to be all the rage next generation; however, if nobody is willing to sell the hardware for minimal, if any, profit will console prices have to rise?

And what about when most (if not all) of the video game systems supply their content (or the bulk of it) digitally?

What are like EB Games going to do then?

They need to review the changing landscape and adapt, because they can get away with rejecting one platform now, but in the short-medium-term future when digitally distributed games are the norm (or close to it), this will just put them out of business regardless!

mmm.. hrielac, just seems to me ebgames is adding further fuel to the fire. If a well known store won't endorse a product then people are obviously less likely to buy it.. Not that it really matters to me anyway because as gok says I'm more than satisfied with my 3000 doing what a Go! can do anyway..

You have to look at it throught the retailers eyes. How are they going to be making a profit if they are shipping in Go's at a higher price than the 3000s and not even being able to sell new/used games for them instore.

You'd think at least they'd (ebgames) have a trade deal with the 3000 for those who do want a PSPGo!.. Does that mean they won't sell the PSN wallet funding cards that SONY plan to release either??

Won't get anywhere near as many sales if they're not physically in store

In the medium-term future, there's a VERY real possibility that the vast majority of gaming systems (or in the case of the iPod Touch/iPhone, systems that play games at a similar level of quality), so these retailers better get used to it...
