ok well I copied the freemcboot files and .elf file onto my memor32 and then ran it by holding R1, a menu comes up and you can then install freemcboot onto any ps2 memory card, I first used an 8mb now I am using a 128mb memory card for more apps and stuff.

once you have freemcboot on the memory card you just put the card in and turn the ps2 on and instead of seeing the regular menu you wil see alot more options...thats about all there is to it you can use esr to run backups.

i wouldnt call that softmod as it uses an external mod chip but it cant get much easier than using that

You can use memor but why bother it has less game compatibility than esr (ps2 homebrew app), it's only useful for installing the software onto a mc and then it's kinda useless.
Once you have freemcboot on a mc you can use it to install freemcboot on any other mc...very handy.
