pinoyplaya said:afternoon all! hey i just found out it was $12000 to $15000 a year for a coarse on Bachelor Degree on Aviaiton! i knew it was alot but not that much! what if i go to the airforce? what then? lol

Hey, you'd do your degree at the Australian Defence Force Academy (ADFA) in Canberra, which is right next to the Royal Military College which is for Army Officer training. I went through studying a Batchelor of Technology in Aeronautical Engineering between 2000 & 2002. It's a pretty good deal, and a worthwhile 2/3 years. At the same time as doing your uni which is through UNSW you'll be doing military and officer training. So your days are pretty full Monday to Friday. But there'll be stuff like weapon training, room and dress inspections, physical training, drill and all sorts of stuff mixed in. And all sorts of sports to play.

BundyDanger says:

As for 'peak physical fitness', the minimum requirements for the RAAF are:

- a 2.4km run in 12 minutes.
- 30 situps (feet not held)
- a 30 second flexed arm hang

To tell you the truth I couldn't do most of this when I arrived at ADFA but got conditioned pretty quick. No extra fitness requirements for pilot apart from needing to be medically in good nick.

As for pay, I think 1st year Officer cadets get over 18,000 for their first year and it goes up each year. After ADFA you'll go straight to Tamworth to start pilot training.

I started as a pilot trainee, but now I'm an Air Traffic Controller which I love, so there's plenty of room to move once you've joined up...

Hope that helps, any questions fire away, or else I can give u my e-mail...

IAMColonel. No He may want to become a commercial pilot but one of the best ways of getting into it and making sure you'll have a job is by being a military pilot. Commercial airlines want EXPERIANCE.

Drexl says:

Damn Muay Thai was brutal tonight, we were doing gradings and during the sparing test one of the girls who was doing her green singlet level (equal to blue, green belt in karate etc) and she was sparring with one of my mates, and he ended up kicking her in the side of her knee which ended up dislocating the knee and tearing the ligaments or something like that.

That was brutal and an ambulance ended up having to be called to help her, So that was basically my night. What has everyone else been doing?

Well, someone mentioned Return of Service Obligation (ROSO) before. If you sign up to be a pilot going through the defence academy you'll sign a contract which could have a ROSO of up to 15 years on the day you join. If you fail pilot's course this will drop back to the ADFA ROSO of around 7 years and you can look at other Defence jobs (may I recommend air traffic control ) or they may allow you to leave.

So you're looking at 15 years or so in the RAAF before you can even consider switching to QANTAS, but if you play it right it should be a worthwhile and fulfilling 15 years with plenty of overseas deployments.

Edit: Its also possible to join the RAAF as a pilot without going through ADFA in which case the ROSO is smaller.

14 Jul 2006 - 09:43 Placid Hills, QLD

BundyDanger says:

When I went through the Aviation degree was only starting out, so I'm not sure of the fine points. I think the ROSO may be slightly shorter and if you fail course you can leave straight away, or chase after another defence job.

As for how long until you're flying RAAF Planes. After ADFA you'd go to Tamworth and fly CT4's for just over 6 months, and after that you'd move over to Perth at RAAF Base Pearce and fly PC9's for almost 3 quarters of a year (these are the very same aircraft that the Roulette's fly and they're super sweet), after that you'd move onto the aircraft that you get selected for and do conversion training. If you are selected for F-111's or F/A-18's you'll first learn to fly Hawks which helps the transition to fast jets. Hope this helps.

But before they'll accept you, you'll still have to do Flight Screening, which is 2 weeks of flying CT4's and CAP-10's in Tamworth BEFORE you join the RAAF where they'll test your ability to LEARN to fly. You'd do this after passing the first interviews and tests.

LOL LOL double LOL

Are u serious, there's hundreds. I control at Darwin 'International' Airport. We are 24/7 and haven't closed since Cyclone Tracey. It's a very busy airport with lots of domestic and international jets and hundreds of 'bug smashers' to make life difficult It's also a RAAF Base, which is why RAAF Officers run the air traffic.

Katherine and Alice Springs are pretty big too, Katherine's also a RAAF Base and both are controlled. The rest are just little fields near small towns and indigenous communities...
