Dude honestly go for the first one.. Because they are exactly the same except OS and the tv tuner card in the 2nd one. HP owns Compaq so you are getting same quality in both cases and dont spend an extra 500 bux cos the 2nd one has a tv tuner card. You can get a nice winfast usb one for less than 100 dollars. (before anyone starts flaming. its good quality). Also you cant even compare the battery life cos they have the same battery.

BTW you said u would upgrade OS. Make sure u upgrade to a legit version of windows cos ur warranty will be void if you get a problem after installing the new OS. Like if the OS is the cause of the problem.

From experience, get something cheap like 1.6gHz and put shitloads of RAM in it. All up would cost $1200 or less, new.

I got 2gig in mine, and its grease lightning. It creams my mates 2.2gHz (or is it a 2.4gHz), anyway, I believe its best to get a reputable CPU with lots of memory, instead of getting a super fast crappy CPU with less RAM

roflllll; 300 pentium I hard drive.. now thats n00b-talk

i've got an acer travelmate 2403WXCi, 1.5Ghz processor, 14.1' WXGA screen, integrated Intel Graphics Media Accelerator 900 (128MB max of shared memory), 768MB RAM (originally 256MB), stock 40Gb HDD (looking at buying external 100Gb HDD), stock CD-RW/DVD-ROM combo (looking at buying external DVD+-RW), wireless B/G integrated, and yeah thats about it. pretty decent value for 900$ and came with a legit version of Windows XP SP2. it's a great little notebook if you're just gonna use it primarily for business/work related stuff and is also fairly decent for games (it can run WoW & Tomb Raider Legend!!!).

hmmm maybe their promotions are over; a week or 2 ago they had some very nice laptops going for under 1.5K (some 1.7K) with good hardware; they had free memory upgrades, free screen upgrades, free HDD upgrades etc.

CORE DUO!! well thats if you're going to do any hardcore stuff that needs a hell of alot of processing speed. i'd go for Centrino or turion if you're just going to use it for casual purposes.
