There were plans to trial a similar set up here in OZ, Telstra had planned on (and trialed in selected areas) to enter into an aggreement with Coca Cola to have a system where customers could text a code from the vending machine and the cost of the product would either be billed to the account or deducted from the prepaid credit. There was also plans to enter discussions with the state governments (in particular NSW and VIC) to set up a system where (similar to what you mentioned in Japan) customers could pay for tickets from their phone ect. Unfortunately the costs of establishing these services plus the fear that Australians would not embrace the services quickly enough to meet said costs put these plans to bed
