ok, got home today, and tried to turn on our PC. I get an error that says:

A disk read error occurred
Press Ctrl+Alt+Del to restart

so I press ctrl+alt+del, and it restarts, and just comes up with that error again. Anyone know what's wrong with it?

What OS (Operating system) are you running?
If its windows vista its a common problem...If its XP it does happen time to time, Skua is correct, Your OS has gone corrupt (Either a file missing or a virus has deleted a system file)
The only way to fix this is insert the OS disk and reinstall the OS (Most likly you will lose everything on the computer) but sometimes there is a repair option which keeps ur files....Just fix's the OS,
Another option is to take it to a computer shop and get them to back up the HDD then get them to reinstall the OS (Will cost you roughly around $150)
If you have any questions please ask

more than likely re-installing the OS will not override your current files.

i think from experience, the boot sector of the HDD might have gone currupt giving you that error.

from watching foxtel there is a show called 'the lab with leo laporte'. in that show they often feature a program called 'spinrite'.

look at labwithleo.com and find that program. its a real good program which can almost guarantee you to recover from such error messages. you might have to pay for it but its well worth it.

mmm...i've had to re-install windows xp so many times because of that error....

if you have a spare computer and want to back up your hard drive, you could always take out the hdd you wanna back up out, set it to a slave drive, stick it into the other computer and copy those files over to your other computer's hard drive

O RLY? there is always the option of getting a linux LiveCD (an operating system on a disc) and doing a virus scan from there, it wouldnt be easy for a noob, it's either that or as mentioned above put it in another computer and set it to slave...

ooooohhhh is there a doctor? well i had this problem with my pc after trying to install a second hardrive i had to pull out the cd-drive and all the hardrives and fix up the cables and give them a clean, then i put them in and it still didnt work!
But you havent been fiddling with your CMOS settings have you? because when you stuff them up it might overlook a hardrive or three

dunno...my dad was stupid and deleted our internet security. and my sister kept disabling it to get onto myspace, which probably let the virus in, which screwed up our internet security, which meant we had to delete it

it went to the repair shop today, but they'd moved, so hopefully taking it tomorrow

I hope it all works out for you Insectoid. I wouldn't know what to do with myself if my computer wasn't working.
I hope you don't lose all your music. That would be a shame.

Pfft, I could recover it all easily.

Might as well offer some suggestions.

Here's a few different things that may or may not work. A and B are my favourites. And F.

A is simplest

a) >>> Make sure you don't have a floppy disk in during startup. Seriously. Because if this is the cause of the problem, I laugh at you. <<<

or

b) 1. Download something like BartPE (Or knoppix, or UBCD, or any of the many other bootable CD's), an operating system which runs off the cd.
2. Boot from it.
3. It'll probably detect the harddrive. NTFS is no issue to it.
4. Copy everything off it onto another drive/thumbdrive/network computer.
5. Dance.
6. Install other operating system on new HD or something.
7. Restore stuffs.

or

c) Put in a second HD, install another OS onto that, and then you'll probably be able to access the first HD's files.

or

d) Do a XP repair.

or

e) Checkdisk.

or

f) Dance.

g) Try the HD mounted as a second drive on another computer, or mounted in a USB enclosure. Your MBR might just by screwed up, doesn't mean you'll lose your data.

h) Move somewhere close to me, and bring it to me. I'll fix it for free. I kind of do this stuff for a living.

Didn't you make copies of your music Insectoid? Well, I think the answer to that question is obvious. If you had other copies, then you wouldn't be so upset. I hope things work out well.
