I'm pretty sure I've got all the finished ones except for one printed out. the one I haven't got I'm pretty sure is on my USB, but there are still other random half finished stuff which I put down incase I decided to use them one day. So, yeh, it's not the END of the world if I lose them, but there's still quite a bit which will be gone

The most family friendly is probably OS X and if you want to get a little more technical then try using Ubuntu like I do. Oh and as Kiah said, you'd be laughed out of the world if it was something like a CD or floppy left in the drive that caused the problem.

id like to try OS as well but id need a mac to run it on. pitty we cant run OS on our PC's like mac's can run windows on theirs.
