cherrona: yes, I completely agree. but, there is some interpretations that are pretty disrespectful to the composer, and would be regarded as wrong. for example, you wouldn't play a crazy fast song at 50 beats per minute, and you wouldn't play a brilliant slow song as fast as you could possibly play it, no matter how good you think it might sound

Changing a song to such extreme degrees isn't a mere misinterpration.
And while some would agree that deliberately changing a song so drastically is disrespectful to the original composer, there would be an equal amount of listeners who would like the new changes.
There is no right or wrong way with music or any other form of art. It's all about perspective and personal taste.

I disagree with you there cherrona. sure, there is musical interpretation. to a point. as a composer myself, I would be insulted if someone went so far as to change the complete feel of my song/piece. I wouldn't mind people messing with it, as long as it kept the general feel that I was going for when I wrote it.

Well, lets agree to disagree then, Insectoid.

I belive music is about free expression, regardless of what has been done to a piece of music.
While you belive that another musician should try to keep the integrity of another composers piece.

Needless to say, each argument is valid.
Although I still belive that Fur Elise, over done or not, is still a beautiful piece of music. That's why it's popular (or over done in your opinion).

Hmm, I just thought of something. If people only just played another composers music exactly how the composer wanted it, then what's the point of playing it at all? Every song played, regardless of who composed it, must still have the personal touch of the one playing it. Anyway, I digress. lol (I'm not hypo, that's why I'm making some sense).

Wow - ok... some people are really into their music.

I see both sides of the debate. But sometimes speeding/slowing it down might make it funky... but then there are some tunes... that no matter how it is changed... should not be touched... FULL STOP!

and yeah cherrona, agree to disagree lol, but still, I'm not saying people have to play it EXACTLY the same, but just keep within the limits and such.

lol I kinda forgot about this thread.
But I was having fun with our little debate, Insectoid.
lol I love music, and I'm passionate about everything I love (passionate, obsessed, it's all good).

Anyway, I probably should've had a warning at the start of this post, I'm a little hypo. lol
Hmmm, looking back at my post (proof reading and probably missing lots of mistakes), I realize that I made more sense than I thought. lol

I play the harp, guitr and drums. I can play the flute a bit, not much really and I can sort of find my way around a piano. I have been playing for about 19 years, I'm also a music teacher by trade, although I don't teach music anymore. In fact I rarely play at all anymore.

That sucks, Jpuss. If you have a talent for something, then you shouldn't let it go to waste.
Also, what's your opinion on what others have said in here? You know, about music teachers (it was mostly directed at piano teachers) being washed up wannabes? (not a nice thing to say, but I don't think like that about music/piano teachers)

Everybodys different. I became a music teaher at uni because I liked the look of the course. I was and continued to be a semi professional muscian during that time. I played in bands and duos and trios for years. I now have kids and cannot put in the hours of practice everyday that is required to charge good money for my services.
I will teach my kids if they want to learn and I still jam, mostly during school holidays now. Sometimes I miss it but, hey, I do other things. My kids are more important and really, it is like riding a bike, you never forget. Just takes more time to get my fingers in the right places.

The harp is a great instrument. Get a C harp and an instruction/teach yourself book and have a crack. It is easy to start to jam with others and with a guitar the harp sounds awesome. A diatonic harp is the most common and is also known as a blues harp. That is what you want. Very cool.
