You buy Half Life 2, Counter Strike or any Valve game ... then you MUST sign up to Steam. All Steam is - is this piece of crap application that stops you from illegally using these games, but is also extremely annoying if you forget your password, OR if you get caught hacking/cheating, then basically you never play again with that game ... but i think that's more of a Server ban thing.

It's just a very extreme way to control gamers. Usually works all good, but when it doesn't aaarggh!!
