Porter, Australia is now in the “knockout phase”, meaning they play to win, they play in the Round of 16 (16 teams left) against Italy, if they win they go through, lose they’re eliminated, draw it goes to extra time and penalties, there must be a winner!

Nervous

I cry red card!!!!! (haha, ref would give it)

Cool, calm and collected, hey someone had to be!

Hey what can I say?

If it wasn’t for these 2, who knows???

Follow Guus’ example, get in the AUSSIE SPIRIT!!!!!!

IAMCOLONEL i couldnt agree with you more on the issue with Simunic not being allowed in this country. I had this discussion too and i think it is pathetic people like him do it. Ive said it time and time again, the Australian teams may have Euro backgrounds but they are Australian and accept it, i dont like scum who come here (born here) and insist on calling me a F****** Aussie. If i ever see Simunic on the street ill be sure to give him a swift kick in the nuts.

Also what was Kalac doing in goals. I hope for Australias sake he doesnt start against Italy.

Now tell me this, is anything seriously going to happen to this ref for missing a handball and a TACKLE in the box. I dont know how he gets away with it.

I think FIFA is actually struggling to find quality referees!!!

Graham Poll, the English number 1, is vastly experienced, and i think he would be the 1st to admit (after seeing the replays of course) 'he had a shocker'. Also but, it is quite clear that he has an earpiece which gives him communication with the linesman and the 4th official, so therefore with the Simunic incident (3 yellows), how the hell did he not get told, sounds like he wasn't the only one who missed it.

I still can't get how there is 18 referees in the World Cup, right. (only one from each country). But they get a referee from a country that probably hasn't even made a world cup (egypt) to do Australia vs Japan (or was it brazil?).

I guess i don't really have that much of a problem, it isn't like i'm a full on racist and all, but i really struggle to respect someone who uses a countries education, lifestyle, social aspects, sporting oppurtunities and safety, and the whole time has the intention of going and playing for a country that he has never lived nor was even born in. I say it isn't just a lack of respect for Australian Football, but Australia itself.

I would be proud to represent Australia in football (even if we were MAJORLY crap), just on the basis of the way we represent ourselves in other sports and to be on the same stage as say, the wallabies or the Australian cricket team.

ps. who made the poll??? there is no such thing as 2nd Rd of 16??? and in the review nick you said that we made the QF's, not yet mate!!

God, i don't think i've made a post that has fitted into one post in this topic

Well done Aussies!

I dont expect anything from them from here on though. Making it to the second round was an amazing effort, but I really wouldnt expect them to go any further then this. Though, we can only hope and continue to give our support.

Italy V Australia is in a way win-win for me being of Italian background lol, though I would LOVE to see Australia win, I cant see it happening.

The Italian that is ruled out through injury is: Alessandro Nesta, was once considered as going to be one of Italy's best ever players, comparing to the likes of Paulo Maldini. Nesta plays for AC Milan, but has been very dissapointing in the last few seasons, as Milan's defence has come under scrutiny!

They have problems in defence, with De Rossi out for 4 games after his 'elbow' incident which saw him sent off against the USA.

geez i missed this

It's funny u say this because, well we have the likes of Viduka that would walk into the Craotian team, (which actually has a couple of Aussie rejects). We have Cahill who is an American Samoa reject, he played for them at age 14 luckily they enabled him to play for Australia!! phew! We also have Kewell who if he had chosen to have never played for Australia, and played for England, then he would have been making his mark as their much needed left winger for the last 8 years!

I think probably the whole Australian team was born in Australia, so they aren't really from other countries, or are they.....*whispers simunic*!

yeah they were pretty much all born and bred in Australia. There was a guy that came to my school talking about sucess and he said that Harry Kewell was his neighbour and every day while he was studying hed here these loud smacks over the road. And they got louder and louder and he went to see what it was one day and it was Kewell just smashing the ball into the garage door.

To the soccer experts. (Nickop, IAMCOLONEL and any others)

Please preview this game with no bias so i can understand fully our chances of beating italy. Ive heard about Italy being champs at winning games 1-0, do you think they could get an early goal and stop the game?

Thankyou!

Well the Aussies certainly have a chance to beat the Azzurri. The Azzurri will go on favourites because of their winning ways. The won all their matches apart from one draw against the USA in one ugly match. They don't go on scoring sprees instead get the vital goal and capitalize on that.

Australia can really hurt the Azzurri, basically push up hard into the midfield and control the possesion. Any sloppy play and they'll pay the price. Biggest threats for Australia are Gilardino, Inzaghi and Toni. 3 very good strikers who can easily capitalize on an error.

The Australians have been talking themselves down saying that this is a 'David vs Goliath' battle. That is just a mind game, no team would actually believe that. You do and you will lose, confidence is a MUST.

Some of the Socceroos have played in the Serie A and know how the Italians play, Vince Grella, Mark Bresciano and Zalac are them, (lets hope Zalac doesnt play). The big injury is Kewell. I doubt he'll be fit enough to actually play more then 30mins so he'll be a big lose.

To answer your q Porter, yes the Azzurri will slow down the play as soon as they score unless Australia have already. But this can prove fatal at times, Australia wont take it for long and they'll start controlling the game if this happens.

Hopefully we can last until the game goes to penalties, the Italians have a shocking reputation with penalty shootouts at the WC.

1990 - Italy were favourites for the WC, but 2 missed penalties and a Maradona finish knocked the Azzurri out of their home town Cup.

1994 - Italy were beaten by Brazil in final with another penalty shootout, after a 0-0 draw

1998 - Were beaten on penalties by eventual winners France.

Italy have so many evenly rated stikers to choose from, i think with each of them it is basically whether it is there day, or if they want to be there. Hopefully NOT!!
