Microsoft and Intel last week tried to swing the computing consumer electronics and entertainment industry toward HD DVD in a format war to establish a higher-capacity successor to today's DVD.
It didn't work.
Who's on each side?
Toshiba leads the HD DVD which also includes Sanyo and NEC.

Blu-ray's list is longer with Sony, Panasonic, Philips, Samsung Sharp, Pioneer and LG. PC makers that support it are Dell, HP and Apple.Also on board are EA Sports.
I believe Blu-ray will win
What are people's opinion on the next gen format?

I think HD-DVD will win, it holds up to 30gb, It's cheaper and it doesn't come in a cartridge so you will be able to burn them. But I think the main factor is price. Yes, Bluray is technically better but there's far more advantages to HD-DVD. I think Bluray will go down the path of Sony's other media formats Betamax, lazerdisc and UMD. It'll be a total flop, HD-DVD wil reign supreme!

Larger data demands? 50gb for video is ridiculous, unless you're projecting the movie in a theatre or somthing you won't notice a difference at all. But as for the gaming capabilities, yes, Bluray is better but I still stand by what I said. The advantages of HD-DVD far outweigh the disadvantages. Capacity is not everything when it comes to optical media.

Companies would not even think about backing up data on an optical disk - one scratch and 50gb of data is lost.

It will come down to cost and availability - but it wont matter as new drives/players will be able to play/read/write-to both formats.

Graphics will be slightly better, but it will depend on what sort of TV you have.
Needs to be HDTV.
