World Cup 2006 - 5/10

EA Sports has stepped up to the plate and delivered. The new FIFA World Cup 2006 game has in my opinion outshone any other soccer game previously released.

Scoring goals has now gone from unfeasible on all difficulties, to just achievable in Perfect and World Class difficulties in the new World Cup game. Hard work, effective possession and persistence WILL pay off.

EA has continued with its normal World Cup games’ tradition, by using the star or impact player method. Your impact player as it is know known can make the impossible, possible. Sweet skills of their own sort can turn a game around. Depending on how good the country is, most have at least 3 impact players and Brazil has about 8 in their starting line-up . (Not fair is it). Some skills are: Impact shooting for your star strikers, impact crossing for the dead ball specialist (i.e. David Beckham) and impact tackling for the impulsive defender who wants to stamp down his authority.

Star players do not have the fire ball or flames coming off of them when they run, like in World Cup 2002.

For me though EA Sports disappointed, the game was released on XBOX, XBOX 360, PS2, Gamecube and PC at least a month before it was on PSP. As a result I was tempted into purchasing it on PC, I just couldn’t wait!

Though I am pretty sure that the PC version would be a bit better and more extensive than the PSP version, I did really want it on PSP! I camped out for about 3 weeks after the release on PC, then cracked, I saw it in the shop pulled out the money and rushed home for my first visit to Germany (on the game of course). Your first sight of it is absolutely unbelievable; the game starts off with streamers and balloons everywhere, in front of a massive crowd. But I think they took the cheap way out, by only using the same start to a game for an England v Brazil game, as there would be in a Togo v Angola game. Consequently, I have gotten use to the atmosphere, extinguishing all excitement I got from the crowd when I first started playing.

EA has created a new points system for World Cup 2006. Now you are scored and added up on how many goals you score, how many corners you get and how many tackles you make. On the negative side but, points are deducted for receiving cards and offsides, or committing fouls.

Some of the rewards you can buy with these points are awesome, the World Cup Final ball, modern day boots including Adidas Pulses and F50’s, Nike Mercurials and many others, you can basically fit your whole team with the boots you own (this feature is with PC, not to sure about PSP).

I think we all know that Australia’s chances of lifting the trophy are very slim to say the least, but you can do it, you can experience a World Cup win with the Socceroos, experience the atmosphere, the excitement and the exhilaration of a 2006 World Cup triumph by you, as Australia in that chair your sitting in right now!

RRP: $69.99

Pros: Graphics are exceptional 9.5/10
When you are one on one it actually can go in
Rewards make your team look professional and real
Impact Players are a dynamic addition

Cons: Crowd atmosphere is anticlimaxed by repetitiveness

Highlight: Scoring outrageously freakish goals from 25 metres out into the top corner!

German 2006 World Cup on PC I give a 9.5/10 so the same for PSP.

I recommend you buy this before it disappears off the shelves if or when Australia gets knocked out.
