Street Fighter Alpha 3 MAX Reviews \ Detail

Street Fighter Alpha 3 Max - 7/10

Street Fighhter Alpha 3 is the first of hopefully many more releases of "Street Fighter" titles on the PSP. Now I've had my copy for the past two weeks and I have been pretty addicted, Street Fighter was the best and still is the best fighting game franchise going around.
Now my opinion is of course slightly biased, I grew up with street fighter, I played and loved every single incarnation of street fighter from the original to the acclaimed alpha series. So of course the chance to belt out some alpha action on my psp meant that it was the very first title that I would purchase on my newly bought PSP.

Graphics:7/10 Fans of the series won't notice much difference here but it is great to see capcom sticking with the high res 2d animations that are a hallmark of the series. Whilst many publishers feel that every game must be in 3d at the sacrifice of gameplay; Capcom are keeping this series strong in 2d (just try and forget that horrible street fighter EX series)

Sound: 6/10 Ok so to really enjoy the sounds from this game you need to be a fan. Fans will have a smile permently plastered to their face everytime they hear Ryu scream "Hadoken!!" as you belt into the opposition, not too mention the original soundtrack to some classic fighting stages. Newcomers to the series will quickly become annoyed with the "announcer" that has to butt in with comments before every fight. Hell it annoyed me, it was if Andrew O'Keefe had somehow high jacked my PSP.

Gameplay: 7/10 Immediately after starting players will notice that all the old favourites from across the series return as well as a few new additions. Unfortunately the control systems for many characters do not translate well to the psp's layout, whhile it may be simple to master the move set of ryu / ken other charcters like Zangief and Bison can be frustrating to say the least. Pulling off super moves with these chacters will leave hardened fans of the arcade series disssapointed as the d pad is very unresponsive at times (don't even get me started on the analogue controls).

However this incarnation does offer a range of modes to keep gamers interested, after players have mastered arcade mode (and sat through the ordinary character endings) you can test your metal in survivor mode or take on 100 opponents in kumite mode. Fans of the arcade incarnations will be pleased to see that there is a tag mode available, however it lacks the fluidity of arcade titles such as x men vs street fighter.

Overall 7/10: This title will please fans of the series but does not translate well enough to the PSP to excite. Best purchased by die hard street fighter fans as a second hand title.

legendkiller said: What no mention of the extra characters in this like Eagle, Yun, Maki or Ingrid!!!

No mention of the 3 level gauges you can use in the game!!!

You could have also mention that this is the Street Fighter game that has the largest character selection with all characters from Street Fighter II all the way up to Super Street Fighter II!!!

Also have you even bothered to try out the World Tour mode?

Immediately after starting players will notice that all the old favourites from across the series return as well as a few new additions.

Did you spot that? World tour mode ammittently was left out, have to admit that the absolute lack of story line just to customise your character really didn't do it for me. Whilst cool that you can mod your character for all game modes, it hardly changes my point that this game will only appeal to fans of the series.

Lot's of characters, wow impress me with bright lights and shiny things.....

Lot's of characters is great if the characters actually have their movesets adapted well. As I said "while it may be simple to master the move set of ryu / ken other charcters like Zangief and Bison can be frustrating to say the least. Pulling off super moves with these chacters will leave hardened fans of the arcade series disssapointed as the d pad is very unresponsive at times."

Now this review was not for me (hardened street fighter fan) but for new comers to the series

Trust me dude nothing will alienate noobs quicker than a whole bunch of characters that are difficult to use initially. Thus the "best for fans of the series" conclusion.
