Ridge Racer - 5/10

Graphics: Probably the best graphics of games currently available on the PSP. Good detail on the cars and the surroundings. Good attention to detail i.e. shadows from buildings and lights when you enter tunnels. The models of some of the cars could be improved, but not by much! 9/10.

Gameplay: Good variety of tracks to race on and the ability to race backwards on all tracks (as well as mirrored if you know how ) adds to greater choice. In 'world tour' the objective is to race against other cars coming 4th,3rd,2nd and finally 1st to move onto new races and unlock new, better cars. There are four tours, basic, pro, expert and max. Each has a jump in difficulty, especially the max tour, in which only four cars race (not in Jap version, thats what you get for importing early and not waiting like the rest of us ). In 'time trial' the objective is to race against your own 'ghost' car to try and improve times on individual tracks. This adds an unexpected amount of playability to the game, with beating your own times (or someone elses) being almost as good as unlocking prizes/cars in tour mode. The new cars are good although they do look quite similar and many of them seem to exhibit similar characteristics with only a small change in the max speed. 8/10.

Sound: Great soundtrack that fits in well with the layout of courses and the races. The greatest thing about it is it doesn't detract from your focussing on the car rather it blends into the background to allow you to focus on driving. 9/10.

Replayability: Multiplayer enables you to race against your friends. As touched on earlier, Time Trial allows you to compete against yourself and beat records on each individual track. Good replayability for you and your friends. 7/10.

Overall: It's a great game, in my opinion the best of the launch titles. It's a game that suits most people and is easy to pick up and play, sporting arcade style physics rather than ultra-realistic. The graphics are great and there are several aspects to the game which make it interesting and different each time.. 8/10
