My guide to playing Doom on your PSP

Doom PSP

-Firstly:
As always with homebrew games we need a PSP that is capable to run homebrew. See some of the other guides on how to do this. This is probably the most important step in being able to run it, besides putting the files on your memory stick, which brings us to the second point.
-Downloading:
Now other then being on 1.5 or custom firmware we need to actually have the game so that we can play it. The Doom PSP port can be found on our friendly old QJ.net. Click here to download it.
If you don't own a copy of Doom or Doom2 then don't worry. The shareware version of Doom95 is freely available for anyone at Download.com. Once these downloads are done then it's time to move onto the next step.
-Installing:
Using either the archive handler that comes with Windows or using a greater third-party program like WinRAR you need to unzip them. This can normally be done by right-clicking on them then going to 'Extract here'. Alternativly you can just open the .zip archive and then drag out the files you want. It's all up to how you like to do it.

Unzip PSPDoom and copy the folder inside it called pspdoom into your GAME150 folder on your PSPs memory stick. Your PSP needs to be in USB mode or in a memory stick reader, obviously. This is the only folder it seems to work in as I have tried it in both GAME352 and GAME and it fails to run when placed in there. I don't know why but it just does.
If done correctly then the eboot for it should be in ms0:\PSP\GAME150\pspdoom.

This part is only the program itself, not the actual levels or game data. The game data for the Doom series are called .WAD. If you down Doom or Doom2 then find the .WAD file, generally called doom2.wad or doom.wad and put it in the folder located within the pspdoom folder called WADS. If you do not own any of the games then you can either buy them (Doom, Doom2 and Final Doom can be found as a package of all 3 games in the $5 bin in most software stores) or you can experince the demo of Doom as found in the shareware Doom95 I mentioned at the top of the guide.

To play the shareware Doom on your PSP unzip the Doom95 archive and find the file called Doom1.wad. Put this into the WADS folder inside pspdoom on your PSP. If you want to be able to actually save the game then you will need to go into the SAVE folder and make a new one and call it SharewareDoom. I figured this out on my own and gave myself a pat on the back for it.

-Play Time:
Time to actually start the game. Launch it like you would with any homebrew game in XMB by going to Game > Memorystick > PSP Doom. Now is the time to find out if you have done everything correctly. When the game starts go into Single Player by highlighting it and pressing X. You will now see a heap of text and a list of the WADs that you have. Select the one that you want and then press X. If you have a mod that you wish to load then select that one and press triangle. When you have choosen the WADs that you want press Start on your PSP to begin the game.

When the game is done loading press Start again to get to the menu. Use the nub and the start button to guide yourself though the menus. When playing press Select to get back to the menu at any time. Controlls are pretty well set. R and L to strafe, nub to move around, X to shoot, O to open doors and use switches, hold square to walk slower and use up and down on the D-pad to change weapons. If you are unhappy with the setting on the controlls then press L, R and Start at the same time to go to the controlls menu. Personally I think that they are fairly well set and fine as they are.

If you followed all the steps correctly and it works then well done. Enjoy the grandaddy of all FPS games, next to Wolf3D of course.

Just wondering, has anyone played to Level 18: The Courtyard in single player? I cannot seem to access one of the secrets due to a bug. One of the teleporter doors isn't opening.

It got successfully hacked after it's second day of being released in Europe. Only disadvantage is you need another downgraded PSP to get the custom firmware on though. The 1.5 subset wont run on it.

Most of the releases have always been really buggy and crash all the time. The PSPDoom 0.5 works without crashing very much but you can't go to sleep in that release and loading/saving takes a hell of a long time. The 0.7 has been the best so far.

Just try it again. I managed to do a 2 player game with the shareware Doom without any problems.

I was curious about that at first but decided to be different. You can fix it for me if you want.

killerjoe said: u can only run this on 1.5 yea not 3.71

True. Your PSP must be on 1.5 or some distro of custom firmware. I mentioned this in the first part of the guide.

Doom95 is only 4.25mb and the PSP Doom port is a small 229kb.

Installing homebrew is pretty self explaining. This release still has a few odd bugs but it has been way more stable then the previous releases. I played with 2 PSPs in the adhoc mode the first chapter of Doom1 and didn't have any troubles.
