Sony are having another crack at getting people interested in buying UMD Movies for their PSP. While Sony’s exclusive media format the Universal Media Disk (UMD) has been relatively successful as a videogame medium it has not seen the same success in the realm of movies. Many retailers have abandoned stocking UMD movies all together in an effort to concentrate on games for the PSP.
UMD Movies were retailing for up to AUD$39 each upon their release in Australia, a price many gamers were not willing to pay. The DVD version often retailed for half the price and the collector’s edition DVD containing more features could easily be found cheaper leaving the overpriced UMD version with little appeal.
Commenting on the failure of the UMD John Koller, Director of Hardware Marketing at Sony Computer Entertainment America has stated "The biggest issue with UMD was the lack of creating for a targeted [demographic]. When we first launched, it was a difficult sale. I don't think it's a big stretch to say that a 16-year-old doesn't have a lot of discretionary income. ... We were offering UMDs that were more expensive than DVDs at the time. And we want content that is in line with what the demo is asking for, action and comedy ... not romantic dramas."
UMD supply has almost completely disappeared but that hasn’t stopped PSP owners playing their favourite movies on their handheld. Sony discovered many gamers were still playing films on their PSP mostly through illegal means. Koller believes now is the time to offer a legal option from the movie studios.
Attempting to get people back onboard the UMD bandwagon, Sony is offering new release movies at USD$9.99 (approx. AUD$11.50) to USD$14.99 (approx. AUD$17.30), a significant price cut. Sony is also trying to gain the support of more studios by promising to deal with the logistics that go with UMD sales such as the licensing, manufacturing, and distribution of UMD’s.
