Australia desperately needs an R18+ classification for videogames, that was what 2008 was all about in the gaming community. Surprisingly games that were predicted to struggle to pass the conservative OFLC, Mad World and Grand Theft Auto: Chinatown Wars, were granted MA15+ ratings last week. Both of these games received an '18' classification in the UK. Include the fact that Silent Hill: Homecoming has also received a classification with only minor edits and all of a sudden the buzz for an R18+ rating has died down, but only until the next game to be refused classification.
Ron Curry, the CEO of he Interactive Entertainment Association of Australia (IEAA), has pledged to continue fighting for the introduction of an R18+ rating for videogames in Australia. Curry stated that the public consultation process for the introduction of an R18+ rating for games is a "significant move in the right direction". Another hot topic in 2009 for the IEAA will be piracy, they will attempt to better inform the public about copyright through a new website "that will specifically assist consumers to better understand copyright and other IP issues and how it relates to video games".
