Cool! Reason and maturity reins supreme yet again in the mypsp forums.

he did provoke them, but atleast he did not cause them harm. Im sure there may have been imitators, but they would have learnt their lesson quickly. Maybe this goes to show that animals, will always be animals and no matter who you are, you will get it!

Atleast he raised the awareness that would normally not have been known with many of these creatures. Like the perception of all sharks being deadly (grey nurse....I didn't know that until I watched his show) and so on and so forth. But he died what he loved doing...

yeh, but nun of us can say he provoked it becuase we havent seen the footage, and probly wont, its just unfortunately one of those things in the world were shit happends, and he just happend to be there.
But i can see alot of people are going to have a new found respect for him and animals, and y wouldnt u, its a horrible thing to say but he went out in a way that ill make him an icon, the man who didnt rest a day 2 help animals, and have fun doing it, he's a legend

Im sorry c527... Im the only LegenD here.... no one else...lol. Anyway.

In honesty, I have to agree with DJ. You'd have to be bloody close for something of that size to strike you. I think Steve made a crucial mistake...... in water you can't move as fast like on land... pure physics. They said that he was swimming 'near' the ray. I think he would have been over. This scenario aside. Put yourself there.

You're filming a doco, and what would look sweet as on the flick? You swimming nearly on top of the ray.... the big fan is spread under you. It would look awesome, don't you think?

And Im sure that is what he has done. But unfortunatley, he got too close, and thought I'd be able to react like I do on land and move away quickly with his 'crickey' flash moves... but you're in water and stuff don't work like that unless you're a fish.

They are not 2m long mate, not the spotted reef stingray, they are about a metre, with a 50cm or so tail.

The fact is, that it was a 'QANTAS' syndrome, you can have a clean record where no mishaps have occured, but the more you proceed, the higher the chance of a failure, unti finally, your luck runs out.

This doesnt mean I hate the guy, coz I dont, I think it is sad that he lost his life this way, and I feel for his kids Bob & Bindi, because I know what it is like to lose your dad, its tough, but it doesnt change the fact that he was close enough to an animal for it to drive its tail through his rib cage.

Stingrays are not like bears etc, they do not follow and stalk their victims, they simply react to objects that invade there body space, Steve does it all the time with other animals, so, to quote DR Phill, 'A good indicator of future behaivour is past behaviour'.

He should have worn sunblock. Sunblock protects against deadly rays.
