Welcome to the site, first of all:
Yes, all the consoles are the same if you are planning on buying a brand new one, though the older models are a bit bigger with less features.
If you want to play downloaded games then you will need to get custom firmware, which I dont know anything about, or you can just download demo's or buy games if you have official firmware.
