There is no doubt that the God of War franchise has become Sony’s love child. It has grown to be one of the most critically and commercially successful franchises on the Playstation 2 and, with two mind-blowing sequels to its name, now is headed to the PSP with God of War: Chains of Olympus. With this transformation from living room to on-the-go-gaming, the question that was always going to be asked was if the game was going to live up to its console counterparts; graphically, gameplay wise and story wise.
From what we got to play of God of War: Chains of Olympus at the eGames Expo this weekend, it brings everything to handheld gaming that the original brought to console gaming and feels every much like that first GoW title. This is extremely fortunate considering how tough it would have been to transform a sensational game that played perfectly on the DualShock 2 controller to a platform that has a stubborn nub as its only joystick (if that’s what you want to call the thing).
Graphically, Chains of Olympus looks superb on the PSP and really pushes the powerful handheld. We’ve seen some pretty impressive titles already on the PSP with MGS: PO and the Syphon Filter titles, but GoW looks set to blow them both out of the water with even more detailed environments and an amazing draw distance.
Anyone familiar with the series will find that the gameplay offers nothing new and plays almost identical to the PS2 versions and it’s executed on the PSP perfectly. If you’re not so familiar with the franchise, the controls are so impressive and accessible that you’ll be mastering the combo’s and attacks after only a few minutes. That’s not to say that the game is easy (from what we played) but rather that the controls throughout the game are fun and simple and allow for even the novice of gamer to get straight into the action.
The sound is superb and successfully captures the feel of the environment you’re in and the title as a whole has the same feel and tone of the console versions.
GoW: Chains of Olympus looks set to be the must-have PSP title that the handheld needs. It is undoubtable the most anticipated title in the near future for portable gaming and looks as though it will offer the same mind-blowing and amazing experience that the first two GoW titles gave us.
