News \ Killing time: Epic Distractions in GTA: Vice City Stories

Millions of gamers the world over are familiar with the epic storylines that comprise Grand Theft Auto. Its tightly woven narrative is a complicated tale of crime, respect, betrayal, and ultimately triumph for the lead character. However, the storyline in Grand Theft Auto is only one reason to play the game. The expansive open environments found in Grand Theft Auto titles are famous for the level of freedom they introduced gamers to. Never before have so many people had such an enjoyable gaming experience doing so little in terms of mission play. But what aspects of open ended gameplay can gamers expect in the upcoming Grand Theft Auto: Vice City Stories? A few old favorites return with enough tweaks to remain wholly new and yet very familiar to gamers, with a series of entirely new gameplay aspects available to occupy the free time of players this Fall.

Insane Stunt Jumps

What Grand Theft Auto title would be complete without the ability to drive stolen cars and motorcycles over great distance risking life, limb, and someone else’s property for personal glory? Insane Stunt Jumps make an epic return in Grand Theft Auto: Vice City Stories. All new locations around Vice City are packed in the city; anything with an incline is fair game. Complementing the advanced water setting, and taking advantage of the jet ski, a host of jumps can be found on the waterways around the city that are truly epic. This fan favorite returns in epic style.

Beach Patrol

Taking life is easy, but can you save one? Gamers will be put to the test with Beach Patrol. Available on Washington Beach, gamers will be able to rescue swimmers and other beachgoers who have wandered into dangerous waters. Putting the new swimming mechanic to the test, players will be able to increase their stamina and improve their gameplay with this challenging new feature—all while paying it forward and saving a few lives.

Chunder Wheel

One of the first new locations players will notice is the fairgrounds, and the central attraction is the Chunder Wheel. Located north of the Washington Beach neighborhood, the fairgrounds is the perfect distraction from the ills of Vice City. Spend an afternoon there, even ride the rides—just like the vehicles, if you see it, you can get in it. This is never more apparent than the Chunder Wheel, which will give you a unique vantage point of the neighboring areas. Bring a pair of binoculars with you for some people watching, or lug up a heavy sniper rifle for monocular fun. Vic was a soldier, after all.

Phil Cassidy’s Gun Range

Located at the southern tip of Vice Point, the gun range is the perfect place to go and squeeze off a few rounds. Vic’s skill with firearms is already solid from his days as a soldier, but a little practice never hurt, and this is one of the few places in Vice City where random gunplay doesn’t result in a 5-star wanted level or hurt feelings. Beware of Phil, however. As a range owner, he is a bit too high strung to deal with the general public, and is considerably well-armed.

Helicopter Tours

When you want to relax and see the sights, there are few better options than a helicopter tour. Simply find a helicopter on one of the many helipads throughout the city and take to the skies. From a technical standpoint, the tours provide the perfect vantage point to see the increased draw distance Rockstar was able to include in the game. From a gameplay standpoint, the helicopter tours allow you to get around to all points of Vice City quickly, and will provide a unique birds-eye view to the new sites and locale of Grand Theft Auto: Vice City Stories.

Rampages

When you’ve had too much of adventure tourism and general relaxation, turn your sights away from the sites and onto the many inhabitants of Vice City in Rampage mode. Located at several points around the city, the Rampage makes its return in truly epic, handheld style. One important new feature—once you’ve been killed or capture, you needn’t run the streets empty handed. Simply pay a bribe outside of the jail or hospital and you can receive all of the weapons you had at precisely the moment the police took you down. Finally, a gun buyback program that makes sense.

These are just a few of the ways for gamers to kill some time in the epic new installment of Grand Theft Auto. Millions of fans the world over have experienced the open-ended world of Vice City before, but with these new additions, there are plenty of ways for the gamer to relax, unwind, and wander into new levels of trouble this Spring.
